Description

This white Amish bread recipe is incredibly soft, slightly sweet, and perfectly fluffy. It reminds me of my grandmother's kitchen and brings comfort and family together. Easy for beginners, this forgiving recipe yields a tender, golden loaf with a beautiful crumb. Perfect for school lunches, holiday dinners, or quiet mornings with butter. Once you try it, you'll never buy store-bought again.

Ingredients

Scale

1 cup Warm water (110°F)
2 1/4 teaspoons Active dry yeast
1/2 cup Granulated sugar
1 teaspoon Salt
1 cup Warm milk
1/4 cup Unsalted butter, melted
56 cups All-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: Combine warm water, yeast, and 1 tablespoon sugar in a bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy
  2. Mix the dough: In a large bowl, combine the remaining sugar, salt, warm milk, and melted butter. Add the yeast mixture
  3. Add flour gradually: Stir in 5 cups of flour. Mix until a soft dough forms
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until smooth and elastic
  5. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size
  6. Punch down the dough. Divide in half. Shape each half into a loaf and place in greased 9×5-inch loaf pans
  7. Cover the pans and let rise again for 45-60 minutes
  8. Bake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. Brush tops with butter immediately

Notes

Use a kitchen scale for the most accurate flour measurement.

The dough loves a warm, draft-free environment to rise.

Check the dough early as you add flour; you want a soft, slightly tacky finish.

Don't overbake, or the crust will be hard.

Brush with butter for a soft, shiny top.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.

Wrap tightly and freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheat slices in the toaster or a warm oven.

For substitutions: honey for sugar, any milk, add an egg for richness, or add herbs, cinnamon, and raisins.
