Description
A comforting baked dish featuring caramelized onions, gnocchi, and melted Gruyère cheese, reminiscent of French onion soup in a hearty skillet meal.
Ingredients
4 Large yellow onions, thinly sliced
4 tablespoons Unsalted butter
3 Fresh thyme sprigs
3 cloves Garlic, minced
2 tablespoons All-purpose flour
2 cups Beef or vegetable broth
1 (16 oz) package Potato gnocchi
1 ½ cups Shredded Gruyère cheese
To taste Salt and black pepper
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: In a large oven-safe skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and thyme. Cook, stirring often, for 25 minutes until onions are soft and golde
- Build the sauce: Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute. Sprinkle flour over onions and cook for 2 minutes. Slowly pour in broth. Bring to a simmer. Season with salt and pepper
- Add gnocchi: Stir the uncooked gnocchi directly into the sauce. Spread it evenly
- Bake to perfection: Top with Gruyère cheese. Transfer skillet to a preheated 400°F oven. Bake for 20 minutes until bubbly and golden brow
- Rest and serve: Let cool for 5 minutes before serving hot
Notes
Do not rush caramelizing the onions; patience is key for best flavor.
Use high-quality broth for a richer taste.
Always shred your own cheese for smoother melting.
For a dairy-free version, use vegan butter and plant-based broth.
Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for 2 months.
