Ingredients
1 block extra-firm tofu
1/3 cup honey (or agave)
2 tbsp soy sauce (low sodium)
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp cornstarch
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oil (avocado or sesame)
1 tbsp rice vinegar
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tsp sesame oil
2 tbsp water
Pinch of red pepper flakes
Instructions
- Press the tofu block for 15 minutes to remove excess water. Meanwhile, cube the tofu into bite-sized pieces
- Toss the cubes with soy sauce, cornstarch, salt, and pepper
- Heat oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the tofu for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden and crispy. Set aside
- In the same pan, sauté minced garlic for 30 seconds. Whisk in honey, soy sauce, vinegar, sesame oil, water, and pepper flakes. Simmer for 1 minute until thickened
- Return the crispy tofu to the pan. Toss everything to coat evenly. Serve immediately over rice or noodles
Notes
Do not skip pressing the tofu; it is crucial for maximum crispiness.
Use a very hot pan for the best sear and do not overcrowd the tofu pieces; work in batches if needed.
Make the sauce just before serving to keep it glossy. Toss the tofu right before eating to prevent sogginess.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a hot skillet or air fryer at 375°F for 5 minutes. Avoid the microwave as it makes the tofu soft.
