Description
This easy saltine toffee recipe—also known as Christmas crack—combines buttery toffee, crisp crackers, and a layer of melted chocolate for a wildly addictive treat.
Ingredients
1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Optional toppings: chopped nuts, sea salt, crushed candy canes, or sprinkles
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil and spray lightly with nonstick spray.
2. Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer to cover the baking sheet.
3. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together, stirring until it begins to boil.
4. Let the mixture boil for 3 minutes without stirring.
5. Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltines and spread gently to cover.
6. Bake in the preheated oven for 5 minutes.
7. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let sit for 2 minutes to melt.
8. Spread the melted chocolate into an even layer with a spatula.
9. Add toppings if desired, then let cool completely at room temperature or refrigerate until set.
10. Break into pieces and store in an airtight container.
Notes
Use parchment or nonstick foil to make cleanup and removal easy.
Try white chocolate or peanut butter chips for a twist.
Store in the fridge for up to 1 week or freeze for longer freshness.
