For the cake:

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 1/2 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 3/4 cups granulated sugar

4 large eggs

1 tbsp vanilla extract

1 cup whole milk

For the frosting:

1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, softened

5 cups powdered sugar

1 tbsp vanilla extract

23 tbsp milk or cream

Red or pink food coloring (optional)


Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour one 8-inch square pan and one 8-inch round pan.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.

4. Alternate adding flour mixture and milk to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.

5. Divide batter evenly between the round and square pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

6. Cool cakes completely. To assemble heart shape: cut the round cake in half and place each half on adjacent top sides of the square cake to form a heart.

7. Make the frosting by beating butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until fluffy. Tint with food coloring if desired.

8. Frost the assembled heart cake and decorate with sprinkles or piping.

Notes

This classic heart shape is made without a special pan—just one square and one round cake!

Chill the cake slightly before frosting for cleaner results.

Use chocolate or strawberry frosting for a flavor twist.
