  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk

  • For the frosting:
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, softened
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 23 tbsp milk or cream
  • Red or pink food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour one 8-inch square pan and one 8-inch round pan.
  • 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • 3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  • 4. Alternate adding flour mixture and milk to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined.
  • 5. Divide batter evenly between the round and square pans. Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  • 6. Cool cakes completely. To assemble heart shape: cut the round cake in half and place each half on adjacent top sides of the square cake to form a heart.
  • 7. Make the frosting by beating butter until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until fluffy. Tint with food coloring if desired.
  • 8. Frost the assembled heart cake and decorate with sprinkles or piping.

Notes

  • This classic heart shape is made without a special pan just one square and one round cake!
  • Chill the cake slightly before frosting for cleaner results.
  • Use chocolate or strawberry frosting for a flavor twist.
