Description
A fresh, elevated green bean casserole inspired by Ina Garten rich, creamy, and topped with perfectly crispy onions.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 lbs fresh green beans, trimmed and cut in half
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 cup chicken broth
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup fried onions (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 375ยฐF (190ยฐC).
2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add green beans and blanch for 3โ4 minutes, then drain and rinse with cold water.
3. In a large skillet, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and cook until softened and lightly golden.
4. Add mushrooms and sautรฉ until they release moisture and begin to brown.
5. Stir in garlic and cook for 1 minute.
6. Sprinkle flour over the mixture and stir for 1 minute to cook off the raw taste.
7. Gradually add chicken broth, stirring constantly, followed by heavy cream.
8. Simmer for 3โ4 minutes until thickened, then stir in Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper.
9. Add the green beans to the skillet and toss to coat evenly.
10. Transfer mixture to a casserole dish, top with fried onions, and bake for 20โ25 minutes until bubbly and golden.
Notes
- For extra flavor, caramelize the onions longer before adding mushrooms.
- You can prepare the casserole ahead and add the fried onions just before baking.
