Instructions
- 1. Preheat oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) and grease two 9-inch round or square cake pans.
- 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- 3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
- 4. Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla.
- 5. Alternate adding flour mixture and milk, beginning and ending with flour, mixing until just combined.
- 6. Add food coloring if desired to represent school colors.
- 7. Divide batter evenly between pans and smooth the tops.
- 8. Bake for 25โ30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- 9. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- 10. Level the cakes if needed and spread buttercream frosting between the layers and over the top and sides.
- 11. Decorate with fondant or chocolate graduation-themed toppers, sprinkles, and piped messages.
- 12. Chill for 15 minutes before serving to set decorations.
