Ingredients

  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, lukewarm
  • 10 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened and cubed
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Optional: coarse sugar or pearl sugar for topping

Instructions

  • 1. In a stand mixer bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
  • 2. Add eggs and milk. Mix with dough hook on low until a shaggy dough forms.
  • 3. Increase speed and knead for 6–8 minutes until smooth. Add butter a few cubes at a time, mixing until fully incorporated.
  • 4. Knead for another 5–6 minutes until dough is shiny and elastic.
  • 5. Fold in chocolate chips gently.
  • 6. Cover bowl and let dough rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 1/2 hours.
  • 7. Punch down dough and divide into 3 equal portions. Roll each into a rope.
  • 8. Braid the ropes and tuck ends under. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • 9. Cover loosely and let rise again for 45–60 minutes.
  • 10. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush loaf with egg wash and sprinkle with sugar if using.
  • 11. Bake for 30–35 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Cool on a rack before slicing.

Notes

  • Use mini chocolate chips to avoid tearing the dough.
  • Dough can be made ahead and refrigerated overnight after first rise.
  • Best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for 2–3 days or frozen for later.
